Workshop Description:
This study group meets monthly to discuss topics related to culture and society. The intricate connection between individual lives with cultural and societal structures have often been overlooked in psychoanalytic practice. Yet, there has also been a strong socio-cultural current in psychoanalytic theorizing, starting with Freud’s classic Civilization and its Discontents. Through works of art, including fiction and movies, we aim to deepen and expand our engagement with various perspectives, including our own. Through exposure to a variety of narratives, including psychoanalytic, participants will improve their cultural competency in treating diverse patients in an efficacious and ethical manner.
Learning Objectives:
1. Increase knowledge of social psychoanalysis, culture, and normative unconscious processes.
2. Improve cultural diversity competence.
3. Increase technical knowledge of socio-cultural interventions to improve performance.
4. Better understand the deleterious mental health consequence of micro-aggressions and the experience of being othered.
