Title: Understanding the Minimal Self: Implications for Psychoanalytic Concepts of Enactment

Presenter: Harry Monty Evans, PhD

Date/Time: January 17, 2024, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm CST

Location: The Center for Integrative and Counseling Psychology

Description: Recently developed philosophical approaches to the self may promote exchanges of ideas between the philosophy of mind and psychoanalysis. The models of the self currently debated are far too numerous to describe in a short article or presentation. One obvious conclusion is that there are far too many models of the self among the various disciplines that one needs to carefully define the model to avoid using the same term for different concepts. Does a “self” exist?

Well, it depends upon the model and method of approaching the concept.

In this presentation, two important models of the will be defined and described as a preparation for thinking about their interaction, enactments, or intersubjectivity.

These important concepts of the self: the “minimal self”, a present moment self and the “narrative self” which involves personal identity and continuity across time are the major focus of the presentation. As selves interact intrapsychically and interpersonally, there is always the potential for enactment. Modell, Eagle, and Kohut (1998) “all maintain that these nonverbal behaviors are in some way at the heart of the therapeutic process.”

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understanding the minimal self-concept and its relation to philosophy of mind and psychoanalysis;

  2. Understanding the narrative self-concept and its relation to personal identity and temporal continuity;

  3. Understanding the relationship of the concepts of enactment, subjectivity, and intersubjectivity in psychoanalysis and clinical implications.
