Prior to COVID-19, many institutes did not permit psychoanalytic candidates to see control cases remotely via video or a telephonic modality. The assumption was that too much was lost and nothing gained in conducting remote analyses. Even though psychoanalytic literature demonstrated the effectiveness of remote therapy and psychoanalysis, many institutes did not permit candidates to continue seeing control cases who were no longer able to meet in person, even when analysands wanted to continue treatment. This all changed in March 2020, when all psychoanalyses, control or not, had to transition to remote analysis.

This panel will provide a reflection by psychoanalytic candidates on the remote treatment they conducted with their patients. The discussant will help put the candidate’s observations into the context of evolving psychoanalytic practice and training norms. Patient vignettes will demonstrate how remote therapy allowed for greater insight into patients’ unconscious through free-associated material or elicited through enactments which might not have emerged as clearly or quickly if the treatment was provided exclusively in the analyst's office. After a year and a half of losses of our therapeutic spaces, our in-person presence with our patients, and in-person learning, we find the psychoanalytic method to be more flexible than previously assumed and exceptionally resilient.
About the Discussant:
Lena Theodorou Ehrlich is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute and Clinical Supervisor at the University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry. She has written on various topics, including resistances to beginning and deepening analysis, sustaining an analytic identity and practice, supervisory countertransferences, and teleanalysis. Her paper “Teleanalysis: Slippery slope or rich opportunity?” won the 2019 Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association’s Prize Award for excellence in psychoanalytic scholarship and distinguished contributions to the journal. In 2020, she published a book entitled Psychoanalysis from the Inside Out: Developing and Sustaining an Analytic Identity and Practice.
About the Presenters:
Brittan Dunn, LCSWis a third-year candidate at adult psychoanalytic program at PANY. He obtained his professional degree from the Columbia University School of Social Work and received a BS from University of Virginia. Brittan maintains a full-time private practice in Brooklyn, New York where he sees patients in individual psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.
Stefany Fortinis a French-Canadian occupational therapist and psychotherapist. She has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in occupational therapy and a master’s in rehabilitation science from McGill University. After moving to the US in 2015, she earned a Master’s of Social Work from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College. Before leaving Canada, Stefany spent 10 years practicing in Montreal, including working with young adults experiencing a first episode of psychosis. She uses her unique multidisciplinary background to counsel individuals and couples who have lost a pregnancy through miscarriage or stillbirth as a peer worker and sees individuals as a clinician in a small group practice in Manhattan. She recently published a paper in the Journal of Illness, Crisis and Loss (2021) titled Nine months of labor: the psychosocial challenges of a pregnancy after a gestational loss. She is in her second year of psychoanalytic training at PANY, but has not yet been to PANY.



Dr. Julia Morrison is an adult and child psychiatrist and a second year psychoanalytic candidate at PANY. She is in private practice. Dr. Morrison completed her residency at Northwell Health and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at NYU. She earned her medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Learning Objectives:
1. To illustrate how conducting remote therapy in the patient homes provided new opportunities for analytic exploration of both internal and external spaces of the analysand and deepened the treatment.
2. To clarify how the body of the analyst as well as patient may be discussed and symbolized even when both bodies are not in the same space.
3. To demonstrate how the analytic process and candidate learning can take place in the setting of remote treatment and training.
