A QUICK COURSE ON DEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOANALYSIS
Dr. Harrison’s course will offer two lectures and two live Q+A video sessions. The first lecture presents a method for evaluating a child brought for consultation because of behavior or other psychological problems, illustrated with the case of a 4-year-old child.The second lecture presents material from the subsequent analytic treatment of the same child. The course will introduce important features of developmental theory and technique using Dr. Harrison’s “The Sandwich Model of Therapeutic Action”, a model that offers an integration of psychoanalytic theory with a contemporary nonlinear developmental perspective, that accommodates cultural differences in understanding how change takes place in adults and children.

Training and Supervising Analyst in Adult and Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis, BPSI, an Assistant Professor Part Time of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, and on the Core Faculty of the Infant-Parent Mental Health Post Graduate Certificate Program at University of Massachusetts Boston.

Dr. Harrison is a Child and Adult Psychoanalyst with over 40 years of clinical experience, who lectures and teaches internationally. She is a pioneer in close-process video analysis and brings her work to underserved communities around the world including India, China, and Pakistan. Dr. Harrison is on faculty in the Infant Mental Health Program at UMass Boston, and she is Founder,Supporting Child Caregivers. She has a private practice in adult and child psychoanalysis and psychiatry in Cambridge, MA.
This course is open to licensed mental health clinicians and trainees on the path to licensure. Continuing Education credits are offered for physicians, psychologists, and social workers.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the value of the disciplined role of consultant to the child psychotherapist.
  2. Describe the three steps of the psychological evaluation of a child using the “Parent Consultation Method”.
  3. Name the three levels of the “sandwich” in the theoretical model of therapeutic action.
  4. Explain how an integration of developmental theory and psychoanalytic theory benefits the clinician in their understanding of clinical material.

Any program participant requesting their individual program registration be canceled, must submit their request in writing via email to Drew Brydon-Cardoso atdbrydon-cardoso@bpsi.org. For fee-based events, a request for cancellation (and refund using the original form of payment) must be received no later than 48 hours in advance of the event. Requests received later than 48 hours prior to the event will not be processed or accepted. All approved refunds are subject to a $10.00 administrative fee. If BPSI cancels an event, all registrants will receive a full refund of fees paid (no administration charge) no later than two business days following the scheduled date of the event, using the original form of payment.
