Playing with Reality: Potential Space and its Collapse during COVID-19

This program will consider the impact of virtual therapy on psychoanalytic work with children made necessary by the COVID-19 pandemic. The move to remote work, in which sessions are conducted on screen rather than in person, profoundly affects the customary setting of analytic treatment. For some children, this represents a significant, internal challenge, while for others, the screen opens new creative possibilities. Donald Winnicott’s significant contributions to work with children and adolescents directly address questions raised by work in this new setting. This program is relevant for clinicians interested in exploring Winnicott’s ideas on transitional and potential space as a framework for addressing this move of therapy to the virtual setting. How can Winnicott’s ideas on transitionality and early childhood development help us understand the importance of psychic space and its impingements for the creative elaboration of personal experience in this contemporary context?

Angela Joyce(Presenter)
is a Fellow in training and supervising psychoanalyst, and child psychoanalyst at the British Psychoanalytical Society. She is Chair of its psychoanalytic training Curriculum Committee and a member of the Education Committee.Angela Joyce is the Chair of the Winnicott Trust.
Karen Melikian(Discussant)
is on the Adult and Child Faculty at BPSI. She is a supervising social worker in the Child and Adolescent Programs at Mclean Hospital.
Lawrence Brown(Moderator)
is a Supervising Child Analyst at BPSI and President, Boston Group for Psychoanalytic Studies; He is Immediate past Co-chair of Child Analysis at BPSI.

Event Cancellation Policies & Procedures
Any program participant requesting their individual program registration be canceled, must submit their request in writing via email to Drew Brydon-Cardoso at dbrydon@bpsi.org. For fee-based events, a request for cancellation (and refund using the original form of payment) must be received no later than 48 hours in advance of the event. Requests received later than 48 hours prior to the event will not be processed or accepted. All approved refunds are subject to a $10.00 administrative fee. If BPSI cancels and event, all registrants will receive a full refund of fees paid (no administration charge) no later than two business days following the scheduled date of the event, using the original form of payment.
