Event Description: Dr. Rivera will utilize the work of D.W. Winnicott as a lens to examine play in the development of queer, transgender, and/or gender-nonconforming patients, and the safety that video games provide for this play. Included is a discussion of a case of a transgender patient who utilized a video game avatar as a tool in therapy during their medical transition.

Purpose: The program is designed to increase the attendees LGBTQ cultural competence and therapeutic effectiveness.

Who Should Attend? The program is extended to members of the Dallas Psychoanalytic Center and we also welcome psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed counselors, mental health students, and other mental health providers from Texas, and across the country, interested in psychoanalytic theory, practice and perspectives.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Apply Winnicottian concepts to formulate patient engagement with video games

  2. Utilize play as an effective therapeutic tool for the queer, transgender, and/or gender non-conforming patient.
